We were honoured to have participated at the 11th National Council meeting on Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy, which took place in Kano State from January 22nd to January 26th, 2024. As fervent advocates for digital transformation and progress, our team, comprising the Honourable Commissioner, Permanent Secretary, and Directors, eagerly engaged in insightful discussions on the pivotal issues shaping our nation’s digital landscape.
Under the theme “Leveraging on Digital Technology and Innovation to Drive Nigeria’s Economic Growth and Development,” the council meeting serves as the premier advisory platform to the Government on matters pertaining to digital economy policies, programs, and strategies. Organized and coordinated by the Federal Ministry of Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy, the gathering brought together stakeholders from all State Ministries responsible for Information and Communication Technology, facilitating robust deliberations and collaborations aimed at advancing digital innovation, entrepreneurship, and skills development nationwide.
One of the key focal points of our advocacy agenda at the meeting was the call for the waiver of fibre optic Right-of-way fees for companies with a local presence in their respective states. This measure was essential for expediting connectivity efforts and catalyzing the expansion of digital infrastructure, thereby accelerating our journey towards a digitally inclusive society.
Furthermore, we were staunch proponents of boosting broadband penetration to ensure inclusive access to high-speed internet services, irrespective of social strata. By narrowing the digital divide, we aimed to empower all segments of society with the transformative benefits of connectivity, driving socioeconomic development and prosperity.
Additionally, we emphasized the imperative of fostering more local content in the field of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) on a national scale. By nurturing indigenous digital content, we aimed to amplify cultural representation, stimulate economic growth, and empower local creators and innovators to thrive in the digital ecosystem.
As we converged at this esteemed council meeting, we reviewed and strategized towards positioning digital innovation and skills development as the cornerstone of our nation’s economy. Alongside fellow stakeholders, we participated in activities such as the ICT Peer Review, where states showcased their respective ICT initiatives, fostering mutual learning and collaboration to drive collective progress.
In unity and collaboration, we pioneered transformative initiatives and embraced the boundless opportunities presented by the digital future. Together, we charted a course towards a prosperous and digitally empowered Nigeria.
